Retreat to the Ganya Starfields
Admiral Troshi's Vanguard
While Genau’s main force was in full retreat, Naplian Admiral Troshi’s vanguard divisions had succeeded in defeating the Terran left flank at Bathes Star. Upon receiving word of Troshi turning the Terran flank, Genau rallied he is fleeing forces and threw them once again into the Terran center. To meet the attack in the center and on her left flank, Admiral Ubomo was forced to form her forces into an L shaped configuration. Ubomo also ordered Admiral Hassan to leave several cruiser squadrons and other light units near the juncture of Pana’s Starstream and the Bara Nebula, taking the remainder of his squadrons to the east of Bathes Star to prevent Troshi’s vanguard elements from encircling the entire Terran fleet.
Second Springman's Well
Genau’s fresh attack in mid-2698, now supported by Admiral PakTo’s dreadnaught division, and Lecca’s Attel Guards battlecruiser division, slowly pushed back Ubomo’s squadrons. Again losing Springman’s Well, this time to the Attel Guard squadrons, and with Troshi threatening to envelop her from the left, Ubomo opted to retreat. Her forces broke off the action in early 2699 and withdrew into the Bara Nebula, or broke off and fled east toward the Ganya Starfields.
Genau’s victory at Bara was important because it shattered the Colonial Terran Fleet and all but cleared the northwest Terran frontier of Grand Alliance forces. Best estimates put Terran losses at 17,500 starships and Naplian or Attel losses at 13,000 starships.
Zagana Crossing
Following the Bara battle, the only action of consequence to take place in the northwest Terran frontier happened in February 2700 when a Reittian Force under Admiral Gulayev met Montoc’s advance screen at Zagana Crossing starsystem. The ensuing engagement is memorable because two squadrons of the Naplian 273rd Dragge fleet division fought alone and unsupported for five days against Gulayev’s entire task force. The 273rd managed to destroy or damage nearly 1,000 Reittian ships before reinforcements arrived. To commemorate the battle, co-emperors Bonate and Benaltep decreed that the words ‘Few Against Thousands’ be inscribed in the colors of the 273rd Dragge.
Bonate
Four months after the battle at Zagana Crossing, Bonate ordered Montoc to join Bonate’s main force to the northeast beyond the Baedecker Starfields, which she did by early 2701.
