The Struggle for the Rimward Reaches


Defeat


The struggle in the Rimward Reaches between the rebel Cybers and the Grand Alliance fleets raged for nearly three centuries. The Briddarri and their allies fought bitterly for every star system and every piece of ground in their kingdom as did every member of the Grand Alliance. However hard they fought, they could not stem the cybernetic tide. Planet by planet, the lights went out all across the Rimward Reaches.

Retreat


By 3562, the cybers controlled every constellation on the Rimward side of the Great Desert Rift. The great empires of the Dresch, the Audrians and the Briddarri were gone. The Terran constellations were full of refugee fleets from worlds lost to Cyber invasions. Some battle fleets of the Rimward empires managed to flee to Terran space but they were a pitiful remnant of the ancient might of those empires.

Loss


In the Upper Reaches, the Borthan were beginning to feel the pressure of the cybernetic advance. In the Lower Reaches, contact had been lost with the Proq and the Qomiti. The Rutak were on the outer flank of the Terran Empire and were fully engaged with the cybers all along their frontier. Along the outer regions of the Rimward Reaches, contact was lost with the Attel. The Svenisch had been overrun and there had been no contact with the Naplians for a century. Briddarri, Audrian and other Rimward empire survivors who were forced out of their own regions of space fought the cybers all across the galaxy. Their ships and technologies can be found scattered across the stars in the ruins and surviving enclaves of the Five Galaxies.

I said we would change the format and publish weekly, and here it is, MONTHS later and you are just reading the next installment. Unhappily, In February and March, our family suffered a couple of setbacks, a broken leg, ankle, actually - mine - and in March we all came down with a whopper of a cold that progressed to walking pneumonia and to top it off, we all ended up in the ER at 3 in the morning with a family member who had suffered a traumatic brain injury. So, I've been a bit distracted. But now, the sickness is gone, my leg is healing nicely, and our prayers were answered when the family member came out of his come after neurosurgery and has made a miraculous recovery.
