The La Tene Free Navy
La Tene and the Mutiny
La Tene was a small interstellar kingdom of 194 starsystems located in the Foota Rift, a region in the northeastern quadrant of the galaxy. In 2214 several senior commanders of the Army and Navy mutinied. Nearly seventy percent of the standing army and about half of the fleet followed the rebel leaders. General Alamar Foyt and Admiral Terric Frendan, the most respected and capable La Tene commanders refused to join the rebellion. Working together, they rallied the remaining units and, with the help of loyalist security forces and the troops of Imperial Marine Corps who remained faithful to the government and their creed, “Terr Asher dol c’arr Juor” (Always faithful to our Salt.) Prior to the mutiny, the rebel admirals had tried but failed to neutralize potentially loyalist marine units through distant deployments and patrols.
Defeat
When the uprising began, rebel and loyalist crews and marines fought bloody battles for control of their vessels, which were often badly damaged in the struggle. The moon bases and stations in the capital system had contingents of loyalist marines who defeated rebel units and secured the home starsystem. With the capital world and home system firmly in loyalist control, the La Tene government demanded the unconditional surrender of all rebels but offered no amnesty to the rebel leaders and their followers. The rebels a death sentence or at best long-term imprisonment.
Piracy
The majority of the surviving Rebel Navy fled La Tene space for the safety of the uncharted regions of the Foota Drift. In order to survive many turned pirate. They formed pirate fleets armed with cruisers and capital ships that dwarfed other pirate contingents. They named themselves the “La Tene Free Navy.” While some factions hoped to return to conquer their lost empire, most of the La Tene Free Navy squadrons ranged far beyond the boundaries of the Foota Rift, covering much of the northeastern quadrant of the galaxy. There were stories of encounters with the LaTene pirates as far afield as the Aaarat Confederacy, the Apshain Federation, and the Buurtas Federacy. Without a permanently occupied region, the La Tene Free Navy was difficult to run to ground and continued to be a thorn in the side of the cybernetic fleets throughout the time of the cyber rebellions.
