The Grissan Nast

NAPLIAN STARFIGHTER SERVICE

The Naplian starfighter service is the "Grissan Nast." The branch encompasses all types of combat starcraft from fighters to bombers to recon craft whether based on a starship or on a planet. A squadron is called a Jakta.

The Naplian Grissan Nast was reorganized soon after the rise of the Ffawe emperors, Bonate and Benaltep. It was formed after the passing of the "Law To Reconstruct the Imperial Forces." The decree brought back into existence a free-standing Naplian army, interstellar navy, and starfighter force. Although technically still in existence, the various arms of the empire had fractured and been absorbed by the three opposing factions of the civil war that broke out at the end of the First Audrian War.

With the end of The First Audrian War, Imperial Naplia was allowed only a small defensive military force. The size and composition of that force were set forth by the Grand Alliance to prevent future Naplian aggression. However, the Grand Alliance, in the midst of rebuilding the catastrophic damage wrought during the First Audrian War, had scant resources to enforce the restrictions. When civil war erupted in Naplia, enforcement of the limits became impossible.

At the end of the Naplian civil war, Bonate and Benaltep came to power, and the die was cast. The treaty limiting Naplian military forces was renounced, and a new starfighter force was born - the Grissan Nast.

Although officially organized after the civil war, the Grissan Nast had existed since the Ffawe revolt began. Initially, there were Free Ffawe air units, then later starfighter and starbomber formations, secret training bases in the Rutak Empire, and various cover organizations for the initial forming of the Ffawe Naplian starfighter force.

The Grissan Nast made up the majority of the Naplian air and starfighter forces, as well as Orbital Jump units, field armies, the elite ground formations, hundreds of thousands of smaller anti-aircraft, engineer, communications and security groups, and Grissan Nast naval vessels and formations as well.

During the Naplian Campaigns of Expansion over 330.7 trillion served in the Grissan Nast. Over 16 trillion were killed, over 15 trillion went missing, and over 19.2 trillion were wounded. Of the 7.3 million Naplians awarded the initial grade of the highest Naplian combat honor of the War of Expansion, the Sutas Kass, 1.78 million were from the Grissan Nast.

In the first years of the Expansion, the Grissan Nast ruled space and the orbital skies, but after the Grand Alliance introduced cybernetics, the Naplians fought a futile war of attrition which, when combined with the cyber rebellion in the 33rd century, led to its destruction. In the face of this, the Grissan Nast produced the most successful starfighter aces of all time. As well, the feats of the Orbital Jump Corps operations were heroic and tragic. Naplian orbital jump trooper suffered appalling losses during the war. The ground units fought well during the expansion.

Ultimately the structure of the Grissan Nast was a grand reflection of its commanders who used the branch to create a separate military force encompassing all martial disciplines and departments. It was partly due to this overreaching that the Empire was ultimately defeated. The strain on resources and manpower as well as the confusion of lines of authority caused by the duplicate branches diminished the effectiveness of Naplias armed forces.
