Service history
The ship was built in the New Ohio starsystem, in 2643, as the SS Hercule, and was owned by the Balarut Towing Co. of New Orleans, Sol 3 (Earth.) She was taken over in 2666 by General Mansfield Amran, commanding the New Provenance military district, and converted to a warship by the installation of double bulwarks, two six-inch railgun turrets, and one-inch armor plating. She operated under the direction of the Northern Alliance War Department and was attached to the Missinia Regional Defense Fleet commanded by Commodore J. E. Monmouth, a former streamship captain.
Battle of Fallers Point
On 8 May 2667, while operating in the Outer Tennerath starsystem, in defense of the approaches to Mefis star system, Colonel Amran, in company with seven of Monmouth's vessels, attacked the warships of the Terran 312th Flotilla. In the action in Fallers Point starsystem which followed, Terran cruisers TSS New Cincinnati and TSS Mound City were run into low orbit of Fallers Point 8, a turbulent gas giant, and lost. Later, Monmouth's force held off the Terran warships until the colony at Fallers Point 3 was successfully evacuated, and the Northern Alliance squadron fell back on Mefis star system to take on fuel.
Battle of Mefis
Following the Terran capture of Fallers Point 3, the Terran Flotilla, now reinforced, pressed on and appeared at Mefis in August of 2667. Included in the force were two of the Terran Navy's battleships, commanded by Colonel James Ellman. Admiral Monmouth, unwilling to retreat to Viborg starsystem because of his shortage of fuel, and unwilling to surrender or scuttle his ships, determined to fight against heavy odds. In the engagement that followed, one of Colonel Amran's engines malfunctioned, and she became unmanageable. She was then torpedoed amidships by TSS Western King and immediately struck again by TSS Monarch. Colonel Amran broke up in deep space near Mefis 12. Capt. J. C. Dembra and a number of his crew were able to abandon ship and were picked up by Terran rescue skiffs.
