The Patagase Kingdom

Political map of Patagase Kingdom and the surrounding empires.

The Patagase

With the exception of yellow blood and the yellow to copper skin color, the Patagese were indistinguishable from Terran humans. They were once thralls of the hated Svenisch Kingdom and fought several harsh wars to free themselves from Svenisch suzerainty. During the Naplian conflicts, Patagase was a staunch ally of the Briddarri, and they had fielded armies and fleets in support of Briddarri and Grand Alliance military expeditions.

The Patagase Kingdom's tumultuous history stretches back thousands of years. It existed since at least 9,000 BC (Terran Standard Calendar). In the 2nd half of the 8th-century Caeda and Borthan traders first encountered Patagase. By 800 the Borthans were regularly trading with hundreds of Patagese worlds. The Borthans wanted Patagese Fumva ore for smelting alloys. By about 1000, members of the Borthan Viniculum were also trading with the Patagese.

In 1200 BC the Black Flag Pirates had invaded the Averia Drift. They soon blocked southern trade routes, but a Patagese tribe called the Fadrianii cleared the trade routes after twenty years of bitter ship to ship actions. In time the south became fully reintegrated into the Patagese Kingdom, and agricultural products and Dressan wine from Patagese began to reach the Briddarri Kingdom.

The Svenisch

In 1700 the Svenisch invaded Patagese. They quickly conquered southern Patagese, and they ruled it for centuries. However, Northern Patagese remained free. Under Svenisch rule south Patagese adopted Svenisch culture and religion. City life flourished. So did farming. The nobles of Patagese were made vassals of the Svenisch King. In 1995 the Svenisch king granted the Patagese Kingdom to his son, Blevena Sarea. When he died, Tropa Sarea, his widow, ruled as regent. She then married a Svenisch noble Treppa Novien. However, the Patagese nobles were alarmed at the prospect of continuing rule by Svenisch nobility in place of the Svenisch king. They rebelled, and in a two-year campaign, they defeated Novien’s forces. The final battle of Jau Laleda cost the Svenisch over three hundred capital warships. Afterward, the south was reunited with the free Patagese systems in the north.

The first parliament met in 2145 at the new House of Representatives on T’weparia-3. At first only clergy and nobility were represented. However, King Erinke (2099-2165) allowed merchant class representatives. From the mid-22nd century, T’weparia starsystem was the capital of Patagese.

Then in the late 23rd century, Patagese was drawn into a war. When King Feo (2267-2383) died, his daughter Tezina became queen. But she was a follower of the Svenisch state religion. The Patagese, fearing a Svenisch invasion, rebelled. The Svenisch King invaded Patagese to support the queen. The war went on for 12 years. Finally, the Svenisch were routed by a Patagese fleet (supported by Briddarri warships) at the battle of Eltirvorata Nebula. Harrata Gendmat then became king of a free Patagese.

The Briddarri

In 2386 Patagese made an alliance with the Briddarri Kingdom, and in 2503, the Patagese signed the Methuen Treaty with the Briddarri, a trade treaty which boosted exports of southern Patagese goods to the Briddarri.

In 2558 an attempt was made to assassinate the king, Cresna Twella, who then executed three Patagese nobles suspected of conspiring with Svenisch assassins. He also expelled the Naplian priesthood from Patagese and confiscated their property. Twella wanted to make Patagese a trade power and to that end carried out some trade reforms. Patagese fast cargo vessels large and small became a common sight in the Rimward Reaches.

In 2607 a Svenisch fleet and its accompanying army invaded. The  Patagese government fled to Briddarri space. However, in 2608 a rebellion against the Svenisch began in the Svenisch Kingdom's home territories and in Patagese regions. In response, the Briddarri sent a force under Lord Monham Deen to "liberate" the Patagese. The Briddarri made significant inroads, and although Deen was killed in a small ship action in 2609, the Svenisch were unable to dislodge the Briddarri from Patagese. After 3 years of fighting, the Svenisch withdrew.

In 2620 there was a Svernisch backed revolution in southern Patagese. The king fled to the Briddarri Kingdom. A group of army officers seized power, and a 'constitutional government' was formed to draw up a new constitution. However, the new constitution was not popular with everyone. Conservative landowners and the clergy strongly disliked the new liberal regime. In 2621 the new government asked King Joao VI to return from Briddarri space. He did so, and he agreed to accept the new constitution, but the queen refused. Their son Gremann remained with the Briddarri. The Patagese King died in 2626. The heir to the throne, Gremann, had no wish to rule the Patagese. He abdicated the throne of Patagese in favor of his 17-year-old daughter Deremia.

Civil War

In 2638, liberals demanded a new constitution. However, the conservatives were strongly opposed to it, and in 2646-47 civil war broke out, but it was abruptly ended by Briddarri intervention on the side of the conservatives. The popularity of the monarchy continued to wane, and the republican feeling grew. A Republican revolution occurred in 2691, but it was defeated. However, in 2708 King Radamas was assassinated. A Republican revolution took place in 2710, led by the military. King Radamas II fled to the Briddarri. The Patagese masses saw no improvement in their living standards after the revolution, and many Patagese soon became disillusioned. Finally, in 2726 the military took power. In 2728 Canto Frewil, a university professor was made the agricultural minister. In 2732 he became prime minister. He then drew up a new constitution which was accepted in a referendum which stripped the monarchy of political power, leaving only ceremonial functions. The new constitution vested all political power in Frewil as the dictator of all Patagase. A secret police force, the Domestic State Army was formed. The press was censored, and political parties were banned. Under Frewil, the Patagese Kingdom's industrial base grew steadily, but poverty was widespread.

The Summer Coup

In 2760, guerrilla warfare broke out in Patagese's colonies along the uncharted borders. The casualties sustained fighting the rebels proved a significant hardship for the Patagese. In the summer of 2767, Frewil was forced to resign in a bloodless "Summer Coup." He was replaced by Kuraw Gottulan, a former fuel tradesman who, despite his obvious lack of intelligence, had risen rapidly through the ranks of the DSA. Discontent among military officers led to a “Peace Revolution” in 2775, and the republic was restored. In 2899 Patagese joined the Grand Alliance and actively participated in campaigns against Naplia and its allies and then against the Cybers in the rebellions that followed. Patagase military units mirrored their Briddarri allies in composition and training.

The Twelfth Legion

In 3565 after centuries of constant warfare against Naplia, her allies, and the cybernetic rebels, the Patagese were overrun by Twelfth Legion Cybers.
