The First Audrian War Begins



   The First Audrian (War 2369-2578) was a conflict that raged for over two hundred years, engulfed the Rimward Reaches, and affected every stellar empire west of the Great Desert Rift.  

   It was a war that set the Imperial Alliance, led by Naplia, against the Grand Alliance led by the Audrian Empire and the Briddarri Kingdom. 

   The war began over the murder of a Svenisch prince, Elotio Demarivic, who was assassinated by a house servant in 2368. The servant, Gelmani Martch, poisoned him while the young prince slept.  The Svenisch Kingdom, a member of the Imperial Alliance, blamed Proq, although, in truth, the murderer was hired by Proq business leaders who opposed the economic policies for the regent, Andavar Demarivic, the victim's uncle.

   Svenisch authorities conducted a long and painstaking investigation lasting fourteen months before issuing a series of reports. The contents of the investigators' reports were not made public. After a summary review, regent Demarivic named the Proq government as his nephew's killers. He ordered the murder of several prominent Proq citizens living in the Svenisch territories. Small special-operations combat teams were dispatched to clandestine outposts in Pressak, along the Proq eastern border to conduct raids in along the Proq frontier.

   In 2370,  the Svenisch issued an ultimatum to Proq, demanding the surrender of specific business and government leaders. The Proq conceded only to Svenisch demands for an investigation into Proq corporate involvement in the assassination but would not allow Svenisch authorities to participate in the Proq inquiry.

   After several violent Svenisch raids along the eastern Proq frontier, the Rutak warned the Svenisch government that an invasion of Proq territory would lead to war. Naplia then informed the Rutak that it would honor Imperial Alliance obligations with the Svenisch. The Briddarri, fearing that the Grand Alliance would be forced to respond to a Svenisch invasion of Proq, offered to mediate. Both sides declined.


WAR!


   The Svenisch declared war on the Proq in 2371. By the next year, Rutak had mobilized its reserves and demanded leave from the Ffawe Naplians for military access to cross their territory for the duration of any war with the Svenisch. Ffawe Naplia declined.

    In 2373, Onwe Naplia demanded assurances from the Rutak that they would not violate Ffawe territory. The Audrians mobilized to defend the protectorates of Ganz and Pressak, aka the Kerrick Principalities, which was a co-protectorate of Proq and Audria. Naplia, in a move to forestall a Rutak occupation, invaded Pressak. Audria then declared war on Naplia. The Briddarri asked Naplia to respect the protectorate territories. The Naplians declined to answer. Based on Naplian silence, the Briddarri and its colonial empires declare war on Naplia, Ffawe Naplia, and the Svenisch. Other member empires of both the Imperial Alliance and the Grand Alliance joined the fight to honor their mutual defense obligations under their respective alliance treaties.

   In 2374, the Naplians invaded Dresch Kingdom territories with the express intent to take the Dresch out of the war quickly and split the Grand Alliance in two. The Proq, in response to news that a Svenisch task force was moving south through Attel, declared war on the Attel. Audria, in support of the Proq, also declare war on Attel.

I said we would change the format and publish weekly, and here it is, MONTHS later and you are just reading the next installment. Unhappily, In February and March, our family suffered a couple of setbacks, a broken leg, ankle, actually - mine - and in March we all came down with a whopper of a cold that progressed to walking pneumonia and to top it off, we all ended up in the ER at 3 in the morning with a family member who had suffered a traumatic brain injury. So, I've been a bit distracted. But now, the sickness is gone, my leg is healing nicely, and our prayers were answered when the family member came out of his come after neurosurgery and has made a miraculous recovery.
