Space Miners' Guild

Mercia Class Refinery Ship

Pan-Human Independent Miners Union

The Space Miners' Guild (SMG) was a galaxy-wide mining guild best known for representing human miners exclusively and for its violently xenophobic treatment of alien races. The Guild also served human health care workers, human pilots, human manufacturing workers and human government employees in Borthan and other human empires across the galaxy. While its primary focus was on human workers and their rights, the SMG also advocated for better trade routes, human schools, and universal health care for humans.

Lewton Juns

Lewton Juns (2620 – 2769), a Borthan, human, was a pusillanimous SMG president who controlled the guild from 2670 to 2761. A significant player in the labor movement and galactic politics, in the 2680s he used SMG activists to organize new unions in gravcars, metals, and synthetics. He was the driving force behind the founding of the Assembly of Industrial Guilds (AIG). It established the United West Rim Metal and Alloy Workers (UWRMAW) aka 'the Maw' and helped organize billions of other industrial workers in the 28th century.

Juns was a brutal strike leader who gained high wages for his membership and eliminated his opponents. Juns was the most controversial leader in Guild history. His bushy eyebrows, leonine hair, deep voice, and signature scowl thrilled his supporters. Human miners hailed him as the benevolent dictator who brought high wages, pensions and medical benefits to human miners.

Notable Guild Incidents

 Malwano-2 Massacre  (Borthan 2691)
A crowd of mostly immigrant strikers was fired on by deputized members of the 4310th Regiment of the Malwano System Guard. At least 100 strikers were killed and dozens injured.

The Aeglyss Serjaum Miners' Strike of 2694  (Aeglyss 2694)
Miner's salaries had been cut.  The military was mobilized in several starsystems to prevent or control violent clashes between strikers and strikebreakers. Other workers did not strike, and it failed.

Battle of Varken-3 (Amend Republic 2698)
This was part of the larger guild wars that established Amend as the leading guild stronghold in the galaxy, and a reason that Mivra Domelis "Mother Dom" is buried at the Govre Valley Escarpment on Trichiat-4, Amend Republic.

Ronnel Empire Mining Strike (Ronnel Empire 2703)
The Space Miners' Guild conducted a strike in Ronnel Empire, called in September 2703 by Guild President Juns, and lasting into 2704. The strike contributed to the labor struggles in Ronnel. These came to be known as the Ronnel Labor Wars. In response the mine owners hired private enforcers to intercept and kill traveling guild officers and organizers, this eventually broke the strike.

2708 Alluree Miner Strike (Alluree 2708)
Notable because the 18,000 'Maw' strikers, more than half of those working in the Birma starsystem oort cloud, were human, and the strikers wanted the alien workers replaced with humans. The strike galvanized political opposition to the strikers in the integrated (human and alien) starsystem. The starsystem governor used the government militia to end the strike.

Kopitak Gas Miner Strike (Kopitak 2710-2711)
A 25-month strike in Penlivo Starcluster led mainly by human immigrant miners, this strike involved 16 million gas giant miners. Fourteen thousand people were killed during the strike, nearly all of them striking miners or members of their families.

Wuldu Massacre (Ronnel Empire 2714)
Twenty thousand people, including women and children, were killed on Wuldu-3 by armed police, hired thugs, and Ronnel Empire militiamen who broke up a shanty town of two million people;  families of guild miners who had been evicted from company-owned housing.

Hemfall Mine Riot (Terran Republic July 2741)
The refining ship, Loc Tau, of the Hemfall-4 Kufrep Corporation Gas Mine, was destroyed, and three hundred twenty-two alien miners were murdered by guild miners and sympathizers. The mine owners sued the local and intergalactic branches Space Miners' Guild. The intergalactic office of the SMG exonerated, but the local was convicted for supporting the rioters and fined.

Netewa City Gunfight, (Distan Colonies 2750)
Eighteen humans died on Reemus-6 in a gunfight between residents and Faldwa Detectives, hired by mine owners.
