Death on the Luran Plains

The First Invasion of Baedecker

From 2672-73, the fighting at Baedecker raged throughout the starsystem but the ground fighting centered on Baedecker Three and Four. Eighteen months earlier, the Terran Republic and the Union of Reittia had assembled a vast fleet to land the final blow against the Ammanian Northern Alliance. Hundreds of warships, thousands of aircraft, tens of thousands of vehicles and millions of soldiers descended upon the last stronghold of the NA and its allies. This was the second conflict between the Terran Republic and the Northern Alliance. They were dubbed the Consular Wars, after the title of the Northern Alliance leadership, the Consuls.

The First Consular War

The first war began in 2648, when a large number of Ammanian controlled starsystems seceded from the Terran Republic and declared independence, as the government the Northern Alliance. The Terrans mobilized to put down the rebellion, and the ensuing struggle lasted for fourteen years, costing millions of lives. The hated Truppen cyborgs made their appearance as the NAs elite combat force. Neither side was able to break the bloody stalemate, and so in 2661, a peace treaty was signed with Terran recognition of the Northern Alliance an independent state.

The Second Consular War

Just four years later, in 2665, the Northern Alliance renewed the conflict, claiming that the Terrans had violated the peace agreement by encroaching on NA territories. This time, allies of the NA declined to get involved, depriving the Ammanians of badly needed support, and the Terrans convinced their old adversary, the Reittians to join the war. This latter conflict lasted eight years and was more costly than the first war. The combined strength of the Terran and Reittian alliance slowly ground down Northern Alliance forces. By 2672, they occupied every key starsystem in Northern Alliance territory until finally, only Baedecker was left. The Terran blockade of the starsystem closed off any possibility of escape, but the invaders knew that this would be the bloodiest campaign of the war. The Northern Alliance forces trapped on Baedecker three and four numbered in the millions. They were dug in, and they had the remnants of the First Truppen Armored Army Group with them. Over seventy-thousand advanced combat cyborgs, and most of them were the Mark IV and Mark V models.

Terran, Reittian and Northern Alliance Main Battle Tanks

The combatants of the consular wars favored 'walker' tanks for their armies. The Terran and Reittian alliance preferred the twin pillar (two-legged) configuration because the 'twin' had good overall speed and agility. However, twin pillar tanks had less stability in gunfights, especially during movement. Northern Alliance forces preferred the four pillar arrangement because their tactical doctrine promoted stability and accuracy over speed, and 'quads' consistently provided a stable gun platform.

Nine examples of  tanks present at Baedecker in 2672 and 2673.  Terran and Reittian vehicles are on the left. NA tanks on the Right. Note that the NA quad at the bottom of the page, the Warthog, is a self-propelled artillery vehicle.

The Last Fight

Twelve Reittian and two Terran army groups landed on Baedecker-4 in the spring of 2672; over nine million men and women. They made landfall in the northern and southern hemispheres. The fighting in the north went wrong, and the four invading army groups were badly mauled, but they managed to maintain a bridgehead. In the south, where the majority of the attacking forces landed, a broad zone of occupation was established. The fight lasted eighteen months, with the remaining Northern Alliance and Truppen units driven into a 75 x 130 kilometer pocket in the Luran Plains hemmed in by the Koth mountains and the Iwa Valley. The final assault by five  Reittian armies took four weeks and cost the Reittians a quarter million lives. Three hundred seventy-eight thousand Ammanians surrendered. No Truppen survived. Northern Alliance POWs were transported off-world and disappeared in the Reitttian gulags.

The Fate of the Northern Alliance

Those worlds that had come under Reittian occupation were annexed by Reittia and subjugated. The Ammanian faith was outlawed. Ammanian assets and places of worship and other assets were confiscated. Northern Alliance leaders were hunted down and imprisoned or executed.

The NA worlds that fell under Terran occupation were rebuilt and brought back into the Republic. Ammanian beliefs were not outlawed but Terran intelligence agencies kept a careful watch for subversives. The Northern Alliance political infrastructure was absorbed, and a quasi-autonomous Northern Alliance legislature was established to permit Ammanian worlds to participate in Republic politics. In this way, the Ammanians could rejoin Terran civilization with dignity and hope for a better future.

As part of the division of spoils between the victors, the Reittian government took over the administration of Baedecker, stripped the worlds of anything useful and then abandoned the starsystem. Citing humanitarian concerns, the Terrans assumed responsibility for the starsystem. Over the next few years, the Terrans rebuilt the infrastructure in and around Baedecker-4's the largest city, Vossberg. They were still rebuilding when the Naplians arrived in 2678.
